15 T/D Vertical Carbonization Line
Turn wood Waste into High-Value Charcoal
For biomass processors tired of inconsistent yields, shoddy charcoal quality, and environmental headaches, our 15 T/D vertical carbonization line isn’t just equipment—it’s a profit-boosting, compliance-friendly transformation. We built this system around a Shandong-based client’s real struggles, turning their 8-ton daily bottleneck into a 15+ ton success story. Here’s how it works.
1. The Client’s Pain Points & Must-Haves
Who They Are
A Shandong biomass recycler has spent 5 years turning logs, branches, and crop residues into charcoal for industrial heating and Southeast Asian exports. Their old horizontal kilns were holding them back: 8 tons/day max, 12-hour batches, and constant complaints about cracked charcoal. When monthly orders jumped 30%, they knew they needed an upgrade to 15 T/D—no compromises on quality or compliance.
Their Biggest Headaches
Their Biggest Headaches
- Inefficiency That Hurt Profits: Horizontal kilns wasted space, requiring two 12-hour shifts just to hit 8 tons. Raw material-to-charcoal yield was only 65%—a lot of waste for a business processing 20+ tons of biomass daily.
- Charcoal Quality That Cost Customers: Moisture swung between 10-18% because of poor drying control. 12% of their charcoal cracked during shipping, leading to returns and lost repeat orders from Thai importers.
- High Costs & Safety Risks: 6 workers per shift manually adjusted kiln temperatures. Energy use hit 220 kWh/ton, and dust emissions (35 mg/m³) far exceeded China’s 10 mg/m³ standard—inspectors were threatening shutdowns.
Non-Negotiable Goals
They gave us clear targets, and we built the line to beat them:
- Capacity: 15 T/D (625 kg/h), with room to hit 16 tons on peak days
- Charcoal Quality: ≥7200 kcal/kg, ≤8% moisture, ≤3% cracking rate, fixed carbon ≥82%
- Efficiency: ≤8-hour batches, ≤140 kWh/ton energy use, ≤4 workers per shift
- Compliance: Dust ≤8 mg/m³, VOCs ≤40 mg/m³—pass GB 13271-2014 with ease
2. The Custom Solution: Built to Fix Their Exact Problems
We didn’t just bolt standard machines together. We designed a seamless flow—Preprocessing → Drying→ Forming → Carbonization —with the vertical carbonization furnace at its core. Every part was calibrated to handle their mixed raw materials (wood chips + coconut shells) and solve their unique issues.
System 1: Preprocessing – Get the Raw Material Right
Uniformity starts here. If wood chips are too big or too small, drying and carbonization fail. We fixed that with three key tools:
Drum Chipper (Model 216, 55 kW)
This workhorse takes logs up to 20 cm diameter and turns them into 10-30 mm chips—no more uneven chunks. The integrated feeding belt cut out manual hauling, saving 1 worker per shift right away. Manganese steel blades stay sharp 3x longer than standard blades, even with tough hardwoods.
Wood Crusher (Model 1600, 132 kW)
Chips become 3-8 mm fine sawdust here—perfect for dense carbonization. Dual 18.5 kW fans and cyclone dust collectors suck up 98% of dust, dropping emissions to 6 mg/m³. That’s not just compliance—it’s a cleaner workshop, too. At 3 T/h output, it keeps up with the 15 T/D goal without breaking a sweat.
Wet Material Silo (Model 3000, 9.5 kW)
Wet sawdust (30-45% moisture) used to clump and “bridge” in old silos, stopping production. Our design adds a 5.5 kW agitator to keep material moving, feeding the dryer nonstop. No more workers climbing in to break up clogs.
System 2: Drying – The Secret to Consistent Charcoal
Moisture swings were the client’s biggest quality issue. We solved it with a three-step drying system that locks in perfect moisture (8-10%):
U-Type Feeder (273 Model, 5.5 kW)
An enclosed 6-meter feeder moves wet sawdust to the dryer without dust leaks. Variable frequency control lets it speed up or slow down based on the dryer’s needs—no overfeeding, no underfeeding.
Three-Layer Roller Dryer (1.8×16m, 21.5 kW)
This is where the magic happens. A 16-meter drum with three internal layers maximizes heat contact—sawdust tumbles through hot air (120-150℃) and loses moisture in one pass. Thermal efficiency hits 86%, cutting energy use by 25% vs. their old single-layer dryer. The 400 reducer keeps it running smooth, even with 3 T/h input.
Cooling System + Dry Material Silo
Dried sawdust (80-90℃) goes straight to an 11 kW cyclone cooler, dropping to ≤35℃ in minutes—critical to stopping moisture reabsorption. A 3-meter dry silo with level sensors ensures the carbonization furnace never runs empty.
System 3: Carbonization & Forming – The Profit Drivers
The vertical carbonization furnace is why this line outperforms old setups. It’s smaller, faster, and more consistent—exactly what the client needed.
Dual-Shaft Distributor (10-Position, 15 kW)
Two 7.5 kW motors spread sawdust evenly across the furnace, preventing hot spots. This one tweak cut the client’s cracking rate from 12% to under 3%.
Post-Extraction Briquette Machines (10 Units, 22 kW Each)
10 machines work in parallel to keep up with the furnace’s output. Each has an enlarged body and wear-resistant pushers (last 8 months vs. 3 months for standard parts) that handle hard coconut shell charcoal. 180 MPa pressure makes briquettes dense (≥1.25 g/cm³)—they don’t crack, even in shipping.
Mesh Belt Conveyor (10-Position, 10.5 kW)
A smoke hood and 5# fan collect residual dust as briquettes cool and move to packaging. The mesh belt lets air circulate, so finished charcoal is ready to ship in 30 minutes.
Vertical Carbonization Furnace (Custom, 15 T/D)
At half the floor space of a horizontal kiln, this furnace uses internal heat circulation to cut energy use by 30%. Temperature stays steady at 480-620℃ (±10℃ difference max), so no more under-carbonized “soft” charcoal or over-carbonized “brittle” batches. A full batch takes just 7-8 hours—4 hours faster than their old system.
System 4: Intelligent Control – Set It and Trust It
A PLC touchscreen centralizes control: real-time temperature, pressure, and feeding speed. If moisture spikes, the system auto-adjusts the dryer. Over-temperature alarms and automatic gas cutoffs prevent accidents—critical for 24-hour operation. One worker can monitor the whole line now.
3. Results: They Beat Every Target
We installed the line in Q4 2024, and it ran nonstop for 3 months. The client’s team was shocked by how much it transformed their operations:
| Metric | Client Target | Actual Performance | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily Capacity | 15 Tons | 15.2-15.8 Tons | Meets export orders with 5% surplus |
| Calorific Value | ≥7200 kcal/kg | 7350-7600 kcal/kg | Thai clients paid 18% higher price |
| Cracking Rate | ≤3% | ≤2.1% | Returns dropped to near zero |
| Energy Use | ≤140 kWh/Ton | 128 kWh/Ton | ~18,000 RMB/month saved on electricity |
| Dust Emissions | ≤8 mg/m³ | ≤5.8 mg/m³ | Passed Beijing/Shanghai compliance checks |
| Workers/Shift | ≤4 | 3 | 180,000 RMB/year labor savings |
The Extra Wins They Didn’t Expect
- A 100-ton/month Thai export order locked in, adding 450,000 RMB/month in revenue
- Expanded to Beijing/Shanghai markets (previously blocked by emissions), growing monthly sales by 45%
- Equipment failure rate hit just 1.8% (vs. 3% target)—minimal downtime
4. What Makes This Line Different
1. Adaptation to Raw Material Characteristics:
- To address the pain point of “metallic impurities,” a conventional magnetic separator was not selected. Instead, a custom-designed suspended electromagnet with strong suction (120N, far exceeding the industry standard of 80N) was used, along with a foreign object detection sensor for dual equipment protection.
- Given the high moisture content of the logs (45%), a three-drum dryer with 85% thermal efficiency was selected (saving 30% energy compared to the customer’s original single-drum dryer). Furthermore, waste from production was used as fuel to further reduce energy consumption.
1. Built for Their Raw Materials
Coconut shells are tough—we upgraded blades and pushers to handle them without frequent replacements. The three-layer dryer handles moisture swings in mixed wood chips, so quality never drops.
2. Vertical = Efficient
Smaller footprint, faster batches, lower energy use—vertical design solves the biggest flaws of horizontal kilns. The client cut their carbonization time by 33%.
3. Compliance Without Compromise
Multi-stage dust removal (crusher → conveyor → hood) means they never worry about inspectors. The system even meets EU emissions standards, opening up more export markets.
4. ROI That Makes Sense
111.3 million RMB investment pays back in 10 months—thanks to higher prices, lower costs, and more orders. That’s half the payback time of their old kilns.
5. What the Client Had to Say
“Our old kilns were a nightmare—we worked 12-hour shifts just to hit 8 tons, and half our time was fixing cracked charcoal or dealing with inspectors. This line changed everything. We’re making 15+ tons/day with 3 workers, the charcoal doesn’t crack, and we passed every environmental check. The Thai buyers love it—we just signed a bigger order. The 1.113 million RMB will be paid off in 10 months, and we’re already planning a second line.”
